Once upon a time there was a crooked tree and a straight tree. And they grew next to each other. And every day the straight tree would look at the crooked tree and he would say, “You’re crooked. You’ve always been crooked and you’ll continue to be crooked. But look at me! Look at me!” said the straight tree. He said, “I’m tall and I’m straight.” And then one day the lumberjacks came into the forest and looked around, and the manager in charge said, “Cut all the straight trees.” And that crooked tree is still there to this day, growing strong and growing strange.
Because I follow a lot of Gender and Sexual Minority blogs I see a lot of people feeling guilty for not being a stereotype. They think because they don’t follow the archetype of being gay, trans, asexual or any other type of lifestyle that they are betraying their labels.
Gender and Sexual Orientation can’t be boxed. We all experience things differently, and both are very fluid. Just because you usually like people of the same sex and you just randomly like this one person of the opposite sex doesn’t make you any less queer. Just because you identify as male doesn’t mean you are any less of a man while wearing a dress, high heels and make-up. Just because you fall in love with someone doesn’t mean you’re betraying your asexualism.
Because we do get so much backlash for being a certain way we feel like we have to prove extra hard that we are serious. Even in our own safe spaces, there’s so much stigma in being a “faker” or a “poser”. We have to prove ourselves every day.
let me reiterate: We have to prove that we are ourselves every day. Straight people don’t have to prove themselves, cisgendered people don’t have to prove themselves, sexual people don’t have to prove themselves. Yet somehow it’s okay to doubt a person who identifies as Gay, Lesbian, Bi, Pan, Poly, Queer, Trans, Gender Varient, or Asexual?
I guess what I’m trying to say is don’t doubt yourself. You don’t have to fit in a box. I know it’s easier said than done but don’t force yourself to be someone you’re not. Just do what makes you happy and be true to yourself.
